Pearl S. Buck 123rd Birthday

( Hilltown Twp., Bucks County, PA)-  Pearl S. Buck International, founded by Nobel and Pulitzer prize winning author and humanitarian will be celebrating its 123rd birthday this month. To celebrate the occasion, the organization will be hosting a Japanese Kimono and Fiber Arts Exhibit from June 24-26 at 10 AM in the Cultural Center. 

Fiber artist Nancy Long will display her Japanese fabric influenced wall art, and other artistic pieces such as quilts, banners, scrolls and vintage kimonos. Long will also give her audience an insight into the Japanese art pieces of sashiko, indigo, family crests as well as the resist dyeing techniques of Japan.

“It is our pleasure to celebrate the 123rd birth year of Pearl Buck’s by hosting this exhibit on the Japanese Kimono and Fiber Arts” said Janet Mintzer, the CEO of Pearl S. Buck International. “We are excited to bring the beauty and elegance of Japanese Kimonos and Fiber Arts to celebrate”.

On Wednesday, June 24th, Long will share her expertise on Japanese Fire Arts, as well as their history and techniques.  On Thursday the 25th,  Ann K. Kaler, will give a Quan Yin (Chinese Goddess of Mercy) lecture highlighting Pearl S. Buck’s Quan Yin statue collection at 10AM. To conclude the festivities on the 26th, attending guests will be invited to sing happy birthday to Pearl S. Buck at 1 PM to celebrate her 123rd birthday. At 2PM, a Katagami lecture (the Japanese craft of making paper stencils for dyeing textiles) will be given, which will include Katagami stencils, hard art, as well as Pearl Buck’s personal artifacts from the house collection. The celebration will conclude with an Artist Reception and Fiber Arts Lecture at 7:00 p.m.

The event  will educate and inspire guests about different cultures which was a vital part of Pearl S. Buck’s writing and continuing legacy through .  Pearl S. Buck International’s mission.
